POWER RAKING
Thatch is a combination of dead and living material that accumulates over time on the soil service due to such factors as over-fertilization, over-watering, and/or soil compaction. A small amount of thatch is beneficial because it helps to moderate soil temperature fluctuations, however too much thatch interferes with water and air movement, reduces fertilizer and pesticide response, and increases the chances for disease or insect damage.
Power raking is a great way to remove this excess thatch. The best time of year for a power raking is in the early spring once the ground has had a chance to dry, however this service can also be applied in early fall so long as your lawn has had a chance to recover before going into winter dormancy. You can begin to determine if thatch is a problem on your lawn by keeping an eye out for dry and dead patches of grass and an unusual sponginess or springiness when you walk on it.
Remove a pie shaped plug of grass with a knife or trowel, or remove a core with a soil probe. Dig deep enough to get some of the soil below. Carefully examine the plug so that you can identify the soil, the grass, and the spongy thatch layer in between. Then measure the depth of the thatch. One-half inch of thatch or less is not a problem. If there is more than that it is time for a thatch management program.
CORE AERATION
Aerating your lawn is one of the most beneficial things you can do to create a lush, healthy, green, weed free lawn. Core aeration quite simply is the mechanical removal of small cores of soil from your lawn using an aeration machine. If you notice areas of compaction from foot traffic or standing water after a rain you may consider this process although even a healthy lawn can benefit from an annual aeration.
Core aeration is the process of removing plugs or cores of soil from your lawn. The cores are left on the lawn and breakdown over time to return valuable nutrients and microorganisms to the soil. Spring or fall are the best time to aerate.
There are many benefits to aeration including increasing water absorption, stimulating root development, reducing soil compaction, enhancing thatch breakdown, and increasing the tolerance to heat and drought stress.
OVERSEEDING
Overseeding compensates for the natural slow-down of the turf's production and is one of the most important tasks for maintaining a thick and healthy lawn. Overseeding can quickly repair a lawn that is thin and patchy from such factors as winter, drought, and insect damage. The best time to perform an overseeding is in conjunction with power raking or aeration. A thin lawn is an invitation to weeds and insect damage, overseeding will insure it stays thick and dense to protect itself. Another benefit of overseeding is that the new varieties of seed will have more disease resistance then the seeds on your lawn.
INSECT AND WEED MANAGEMENT
By far and away the best weed and insect prevention is maintaining a healthy and lush lawn. Starting a good maintenance program and continuing that program are keys to success. However weeds and insects are opportunistic and will take advantage of any desirable situation that comes about whether it be heat stress or not enough/too much watering among many other factors. When there are problems that may arise it is a matter of identifying not only the problem but also what may have caused the problem to begin with so a solution can not only be applied to resolve the issue but steps can be taken to avoid a repeat of the same problem.
